Often cited as one of the saddest examples of 1970s architectural production, the ITHQ edifice needed redefining, not only to update the building functionally and technically, but also to change its negative perception while affirming its relation to the city. The challenges at the outset were considerable: the building had to remain in operation and the existing structure could not bear additional loads. This is why the addition of a "second skin" was recommended. Once grey, lifeless and impenetrable, the building is now colourful, bright, translucent, immediately associated with the movement that has rejuvenated the Quebec hotel and food service industries. The approaches are appealing; the arcade on De Rigaud Street is bright and heavily glazed, creating the feeling of passing by cosy interiors that extend outside. On Saint-Denis, the hall, made transparent by its oculus, reveals the activities of students and visitors. (Designed and executed with Les architectes Lapointe Magne et associés) |
